The Ambassador Bridge opened on 15 November 1929 and carries four lanes of traffic between Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan. It is privately operated.
No. Foot and bicycle traffic has been prohibited since 11 September 2001 and there is no walkway. The Gordie Howe Bridge multi-use path is the only crossing between Windsor and Detroit you can walk or ride across, and it keeps its own shorter hours, so check those before you set out.
The operator lists E-ZPass acceptance as beginning in fall 2026, without a confirmed start date. Check its current notice before relying on it, and bring a credit card, U.S. cash or a Premier prepaid card.
Ready Lane is for U.S.-bound travellers with an eligible card: an enhanced licence, a U.S. passport card, or a NEXUS, SENTRI, Global Entry or FAST card. Everyone in the vehicle aged 16 or older needs an eligible card. A passport book does not qualify.
Cash is accepted here in either currency, which the tunnel does not do at all. The catch is the exchange: rates are set in U.S. dollars, so the Canadian-cash price is the most expensive way across for a car, and the Premier prepaid card is the cheapest.
Motorcycles are permitted here, unlike at the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel, and so are oversized and wide loads under the operator’s permit requirements. Between the two bridges and the tunnel, this is the crossing with the fewest vehicle restrictions.
The agencies count the queue at the booths, not the roads leading to them. The Windsor approach here can add time that no official number captures — worth allowing for on this crossing in particular.
