The Peace Bridge opened on 1 June 1927, carrying road traffic across the Niagara River between Fort Erie, Ontario and Buffalo, New York. It is owned and operated by the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority, a binational agency.
Quick answers
Can you walk or cycle across the Peace Bridge?
Yes, free of charge, at any hour, using the south sidewalk. From Canada you reach it through the pedestrian tunnel under the bridge; from the U.S., from the parking lot off Busti Avenue. You still stop for inspection and you need the same identification a driver would carry.
What identification do I need to cross?
What you need to carry depends on your citizenship, not on this bridge. U.S. and Canadian citizens aged 16 or over can cross by land on any WHTI-compliant document: a passport, U.S. passport card, NEXUS or FAST card, or an enhanced driver’s licence. U.S. and Canadian citizens 15 and under can use a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship.
Can I use the Ready Lane?
A Ready Lane is a faster U.S.-bound lane for anyone carrying an RFID-chipped card the booth can read from a distance — a U.S. passport card, an enhanced licence, or a NEXUS, SENTRI, Global Entry or FAST card. An ordinary passport book does not qualify, and everyone aged 16 or over in the vehicle needs an eligible card.
Tolls and payment
The bridge is cashless. No cash is taken at any lane, in either currency, so arriving with only banknotes means you cannot pay. E-ZPass runs at roughly half the card rate at every tier, and the operator notes it also saves money on the New York State Thruway, including the Grand Island bridges.
The published wait times do not count the toll plaza. What the agencies publish is the inspection queue, so budget separately for paying at the booth.
Who can cross
Permanent residents and travellers of other nationalities follow different rules, and may need a passport, a visa or a border-crossing card depending on status and direction. Check CBP for entering the United States and CBSA for entering Canada before you travel.
Immigration services
Two services exist only at this plaza. USMCA TN and L-visa appointments are booked online and held here Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. I-192 and I-212 waiver applications need no appointment and are taken first come, first served, Monday to Thursday, 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm — here and at the Rainbow and Lewiston bridges.
