The Gordie Howe International Bridge opened to vehicle traffic on 27 July 2026, connecting Windsor, Ontario with Detroit, Michigan. It is the newest of the three Detroit–Windsor crossings, and the only one you can cross on foot or by bike.
About 45 minutes on foot or 20 minutes by bike, one way, at the path’s 20 km/h speed limit. Border inspection at the end of the path is a separate wait that the operator does not include in those times.
Travel identification accepted by CBP or CBSA, for yourself and for any children with you. Every path user goes through border inspection before leaving the path, in facilities the operator keeps separate from the vehicle lanes.
Tolls are set by vehicle height and axle count, not by vehicle type. Cars, SUVs, minivans, motorcycles and light trucks under 2.3 m (7.5 ft) pay the flat rate; RVs, buses, trucks, vehicles towing a fifth wheel and anything else over 2.3 m pay per axle. A vehicle with items mounted on the roof should use an attended toll lane.
The path entrances are at 4389 Sandwich Street in Windsor and 6524 West Jefferson Avenue in Detroit.
There is no parking at either port of entry. The operator suggests the Malden Park trailhead in Windsor or the Clark Park trailhead in Detroit.
Walking and cycling are allowed on the multi-use path. The path speed limit is 20 km/h. Border processing is separate from the listed path crossing time. The path can close temporarily; check the bridge operator before leaving.
There is no other pedestrian or cycling crossing in Detroit–Windsor: pedestrians and bicycles are prohibited at both the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel and Ambassador Bridge.
The Linq Tunnel Bus is a car-free alternative through the tunnel. The regular one-way fare is $17.50, paid on board by debit or credit card only. Bicycle carriage is not confirmed.
Breakaway is the operator’s prepaid discount programme, open to both personal and commercial customers. The published rates are in Canadian dollars; the operator also posts U.S. figures (about $5.75 for a car), but if you pay by card you are billed in Canadian dollars at your bank’s exchange rate whichever way you are travelling.
