The Gordie Howe International Bridge opened to vehicle traffic on 27 July 2026, connecting Windsor, Ontario with Detroit, Michigan. It is the newest of the three Detroit–Windsor crossings, and the only one you can cross on foot or by bike.

How long does it take to walk or cycle across?
Planning to walk both ways? That is about 90 minutes of walking plus two border checks. In winter, when the path closes in the afternoon, start a round trip on foot by early afternoon or you will not get back before it shuts.
What do I need to carry to cross on foot?
Carry a passport, enhanced licence, or other accepted travel document, for yourself and for any children with you. You clear customs on foot exactly as you would in a car.
How are the tolls calculated?
Watch the height, not the vehicle type. Anything over 2.3 m (7.5 ft), including RVs, tall vans and vehicles towing fifth wheels, is charged per axle rather than the flat car rate. A two-axle RV therefore pays $24.00 CAD, three times the car price. If you have a roof box or roof rack, use an attended lane so you are classified by a person rather than a sensor.
Walking or cycling across
Walking and cycling are allowed on the multi-use path. The path speed limit is 20 km/h. Border processing is separate from the listed path crossing time. The path can close temporarily; check the bridge operator before leaving.
If the path closes
There is no other pedestrian or cycling crossing in Detroit–Windsor: pedestrians and bicycles are prohibited at both the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel and Ambassador Bridge.
The Linq Tunnel Bus is a car-free alternative through the tunnel. The regular one-way fare is $17.50, paid on board by debit or credit card only. Bicycle carriage is not confirmed.
Tolls and payment
Breakaway is the operator’s prepaid discount programme, open to both personal and commercial customers. The published rates are in Canadian dollars; the operator also posts U.S. figures (about $5.75 for a car), but if you pay by card you are billed in Canadian dollars at your bank’s exchange rate whichever way you are travelling.
