The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is a double-deck steel arch that opened on 27 August 1897, spanning the Niagara gorge about 225 feet above the rapids. Its upper deck carries a single rail line used by the Amtrak and VIA Rail “Maple Leaf” service; its lower deck carries the road traffic. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission has owned it since 1959, and also operates the Rainbow and Queenston–Lewiston bridges.
NEXUS cardholders only. The operator describes it as dedicated to NEXUS cardholders, with Global Entry permitted U.S.-bound only. No commercial vehicles, no pedestrians, no bicycles and nothing in tow. Without a NEXUS card you will have to turn around, so this is not a bridge to try on spec.
Seven in the morning to eleven at night, with two car inspection lanes in each direction. Outside that window the crossing is shut and no lane will show a wait. Plan around the hours as well as the NEXUS requirement, because either one on its own will turn you back.
NEXUS is a joint CBP and CBSA trusted-traveller programme that pre-screens applicants for expedited crossing. To apply, CBP directs travellers to call 1-866-NEXUS26 or use the Trusted Traveler Programs portal; processing includes an interview.
Every occupant of the vehicle needs a valid NEXUS card. Global Entry alone only covers you travelling toward the United States — not toward Canada. If anyone in the car lacks NEXUS, this is not your bridge; the Rainbow Bridge and Queenston–Lewiston Bridge nearby take standard traffic.
Only autos are permitted. The operator explicitly excludes commercial vehicles and trucks, pedestrians, bicycles, and anything being towed.
An enrolment centre has operated at this crossing, and it closes when the bridge does. The Bridge Commission shut both from 1 April to 5 May 2019 for overpass removal work nearby, so confirm the centre is open before travelling here for an interview.
