Does winter weather ever close I-15 at Sweetgrass?
Interstate 15 is not on Montana DOT’s list of seasonally closed roads, so there is no scheduled winter shutdown. The highway has been closed for hours at a time during severe storms — Toole County has closed the highway between Shelby and the border during heavy snow and ice — so check 511mt.gov or Alberta’s 511 before a winter trip on either side.
NEXUS and commercial lanes
The dedicated Canada-bound NEXUS lane keeps a short weekday afternoon window. The U.S.-bound listing is broader: CBSA says that service runs seven days a week and, until further notice, NEXUS is accepted in all lanes at Coutts.
Do not treat those two notices as the same schedule. They describe different directions and lane arrangements. Follow the plaza signs on arrival and confirm a time-sensitive NEXUS trip with the port rather than assuming that the Canada-bound dedicated lane runs all day.
CBSA also lists a FAST/DEC lane for pre-approved commercial traffic. Passenger and commercial vehicles enter different inspection streams, so the Passenger time is not a truck estimate.
Duty-free and port services
The Canadian side has a duty-free shop; CBP’s Sweetgrass page lists no comparable retail service on the U.S. side. CBSA does not publish the shop’s hours, so confirm them through the Border Information Service at 1-800-461-9999 before planning around a stop.
CBSA’s Coutts record also lists highway, rail and commercial-export services. CBP’s special instructions address the local airstrip and vehicle-export procedures, so anyone using either service should read the current port instructions before arriving.
