The replacement bridge
The former bridge was roughly 102 years old and had carried a 5-ton (4.5-tonne) weight limit since 2017. Its replacement opened at 11:00 am on 6 June 2024 beside a new U.S. land port of entry, which replaced a facility built in 1959. The same temporary weight limit remained until New Brunswick approach work finished later that August; GSA planned a joint U.S.–Canada ribbon-cutting for 15 August 2024.
During the June switchover, both bridges briefly closed. GSA pointed travellers to Fort Kent, about 19 miles (31 km) west, and Van Buren, about 24 miles (39 km) east.
