About this crossing

Fort Hancock is a 510-foot wooden bridge from 1937 — one lane each way between Fort Hancock, Texas and El Porvenir, Chihuahua, open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for cars and pedestrians, with no trucks and no toll in either direction.

The bridge

The boundary commissions own the wooden 1937 structure, and the replacement U.S. inspection facility opened in April 2003. On the U.S. side FM 1088 runs up to SH 20 and I-10; from El Porvenir the road connects toward Mexico 2.

Quick answers

Is Fort Hancock open 24 hours?

No — 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The short operating day matters when planning a return: after 6 p.m. the nearest open crossings are Tornillo, open to 10 p.m., and Ysleta, which runs around the clock.

Can commercial trucks cross at Fort Hancock?

No — this is a passenger and pedestrian crossing; CBP carries no commercial record for it. The nearest cargo crossings are Tornillo, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Ysleta, weekdays 6 a.m. to midnight and Saturday to 2 p.m.

Is Fort Hancock toll-free?

Yes — verified free in both directions, unusual for this stretch of the border. Its neighbours all charge: Tornillo collects MX$41 / US$2.50 for a northbound car, and Ysleta posts toll tables in both directions.
