San Ysidro is the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere, connecting central San Diego with downtown Tijuana for cars, buses and pedestrians; commercial trucks use Otay Mesa instead. The live U.S.-bound waits come from CBP. Mexico-bound car conditions are published separately by Caltrans for the I-5 and I-805 approaches.
CBP lists the U.S.-bound crossing as open 24 hours for cars and pedestrians. Individual lanes keep their own schedules — a SENTRI or Ready lane can close overnight while general lanes stay open — and PedWest has shorter posted hours. Check the live lane status above before a late-night crossing.
No. San Ysidro has no commercial lanes; the region’s truck crossing is Otay Mesa, which reports its own general and FAST cargo waits. A freight rail line does cross the border at San Ysidro, but it carries no road traffic.
They are two pedestrian buildings of the same port with separate wait readings. PedEast, on the main site, is the 24-hour route this page reports. PedWest exits at Virginia Avenue on the western side and keeps its own, shorter hours — check its page before choosing it.
CBP reports separate waits for general, SENTRI and Ready Lane traffic, for both cars and pedestrians. The programs differ: SENTRI requires enrolment in CBP’s trusted-traveller program, while Ready Lane takes any RFID-chipped travel document, carried by every traveller aged 16 or older in the vehicle or group. A passport book has no RFID chip and does not qualify.
Caltrans publishes the southbound car wait for the I-5 and I-805 approaches on its QuickMap border page, with current conditions and 15- and 30-minute projections — cars only, no pedestrian or truck figures.
The San Ysidro Land Port of Entry sits at 720 East San Ysidro Boulevard, where I-5 and I-805 end. A $741 million rebuild, finished in 2019–2020, gave it 63 inspection booths over 34 vehicle lanes and two pedestrian buildings: PedEast on the main site, and PedWest at Virginia Avenue with its own hours and its own wait reading.
In 2025 the port handled 15.3 million U.S.-bound personal vehicles and 8.0 million pedestrians (port-level BTS counts). August was the busiest driving month, February the quietest.
PedWest is the western walking route when its posted hours fit your trip. Otay Mesa, a few miles east, takes cars, pedestrians and all of the corridor’s commercial trucks. Cross Border Xpress is a ticketed bridge for Tijuana Airport passengers only, and Otay Mesa East is still under construction.
