About this crossing
Otay Mesa is San Diego–Tijuana’s workhorse: one port, a few miles east of San Ysidro on SR-905, serving cars, buses, pedestrians and all of the corridor’s commercial trucks. Cars and pedestrians cross 24 hours a day; the cargo facility runs 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Caltrans separately reports the Mexico-bound car wait on the SR-905 approach.

Does Otay Mesa have a southbound wait?

SENTRI, Ready Lane and FAST
CBP reports separate car waits for General, SENTRI and Ready lanes. Ready Lane needs an RFID document from every traveller aged 16 or older; RFID holders may still use a general lane, and Ready eligibility alone does not authorize SENTRI. Pedestrians have a General reading only. FAST is the commercial trusted lane, for enrolled truck drivers only.

The port
The U.S. facility sits at 9777 Via de la Amistad, reached by SR-905 with connections to I-805 and SR-125; the Mexican side is Mesa de Otay I. GSA finished a $134 million modernization in 2024 that expanded commercial inspection and doubled pedestrian inspection booths from six to twelve. A second crossing, Otay Mesa East, is under construction about two miles further east and is not open.
Busy times
In 2025 the port handled about 6.1 million US-bound personal vehicles, 3.6 million pedestrians and 990,000 trucks (port-level BTS counts). January was the busiest driving month; trucks peaked in October.
